Parliament advocates in-depth reform of UN

Brussels, 07/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament argues that the EU should have a seat on a modernised United Nations Security Council.

The Council should “support a comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council … in order to better reflect the new world reality and to ensure that the Council is able to deal effectively with threats to international peace and security”, Parliament says in a recommendation prepared by Andrey Kovatchev (EPP, Bulgaria) that was adopted ahead of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

MEPs also call on the Council to “encourage” and “explore the possible new prospects for strengthened cooperation between the EU and the UN in reshaping their strategic visions on security”. They say that the Council must increase member state support for UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations that include a human rights component and clear exit strategies. The member states are also called on to further develop procedures for the use of EU Common Security and Defence Policy in support of UN operations.

Parliament highlights, too, the need for member states to support UN action on tackling terrorism, managing the challenges of mass migration and climate change, on non-proliferation and disarmament, and on respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
