Brussels, 29/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Latvia on Thursday 29 April calling on it to ensure full transposition of Directive 2011/70/Euratom on radioactive waste, which ought to have been transposed by 23 August 2013.
This directive requires member states to put in place appropriate national arrangements for a high level of safety in spent fuel and radioactive waste management. These arrangements seek to protect workers and the general public from the dangers arising from ionising radiation. The text also requires states to provide public information on spent fuel and radioactive waste management issues.
Latvia has two months to comply with this obligation; otherwise, the Commission may decide to refer Latvia to the Court of Justice of the EU. (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
