29/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - No wall at Brenner Pass. Austrian Home Affairs Minister Wolfgang Sobotka gave his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano assurances on Thursday 28 April that the Austrian government would not build a wall at the Brenner Pass, news agencies have reported. Austria will carry out additional checks at its borders only where that is really necessary and movement will not be interrupted, he said. Italy is concerned at the Austrian plans, fearing that its economic activity could suffer as a result of the checks. The European Commission is also concerned that what Austria is doing could be in breach of Schengen rules. The meeting in Rome of the two ministers was designed to ease tensions. (SP)
