08/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - Changes to personal data protection enshrined by Council. Using the written procedure on Friday 8 April, the EU Council of Ministers adopted a package of legislation to reform the protection of personal data, following a compromise with the European Parliament in mid-December (see EUROPE 11455). The package contains a general regulation and a directive on data processing by the police and justice authorities, and revises a 1995 directive and a 2008 framework decision respectively. The EP's civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee will adopt this package in Strasbourg on Tuesday 12 April and the MEPs as a whole will probably adopt it on Thursday 14 April at the same time as the European PNR.
