Brussels, 08/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - The re-design of the European electricity market will be the central focus of an informal meeting of EU energy ministers in Amsterdam on Monday 11 April.
Discussions will be devoted to regional cooperation on a revised market model for electricity, says the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU on its website. At the time of going to press on Friday 8 April, no agenda or working document was available to the press.
Discussion will be guided by a number of questions: - how to create a more flexible electricity market and achieve further market integration and the smooth integration of renewable energy; - how to ensure that this is done as cost-effectively as possible; - how to make optimum use of storage and of a more active role for consumers; - the impact of more flexibility on electricity prices, and how to create a good climate for investment in interconnections.
In its first raft of measures for implementation of the Energy union project, unveiled in the summer of 2015, the Commission set out options for re-designing the electricity market so that the future pan-European electricity market will be able to deal with large-scale cross-border flows and increased generation of electricity from renewable sources (see EUROPE 11356).
