Leaders to discuss situation in Syria and Libya

Brussels, 17/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - The EU heads of state and government are expected to discuss the situation in Syria and also Libya on Friday 19 February.

Although, on the morning of Wednesday 17 February, the conclusions on Syria had not been prepared, according to several European sources, the European leaders could bring their support to the decisions taken on the night of 11-12 February by the international Syria Support Group - such as the ceasefire and access for humanitarian aid (see EUROPE 11489). When the European leaders discuss the Syrian issue, the ceasefire should normally have entered into force. The European Council could also speak out against the continuing Russian air strikes in Syria, a European source told EUROPE, while stating that this would depend on how this situation develops on the ground. “For some leaders, Russia's bombing of Syria is an issue that creates serious concern”, another source stated. The issue of the Turkish bombings could also arise, although Ankara announced on 17 February that it would stop its strikes against the Kurdish organisations in Syria, which it considers as terrorist.

The leaders are also expected to discuss the humanitarian situation.

Support for the national unity government in Libya. The European Council could also discuss and adopt conclusions on the latest developments in Libya. They could reiterate the EU's support for a national unity government. A new version of the government was presented on 15 February, but must still obtain the approval of the Chamber of Representatives. The prime minister of the national unity government, Fayez al-Sarraj, is due to be heard by the Chamber on Saturday about the composition of his new government. The European leaders should also reiterate their resolve to help the country once the government has been set up. The EU has promised the new Libyan government €100 million in support.
