17/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU welcomes clean elections. On Monday 16 February, the EU welcomed the good organisation of the presidential and general elections on 14 February in the Central African Republic and called for the calm established to be maintained. In a joint press release, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini and the European Commissioner for Development, Neven Mimica, stated calm was required in order to “pursue the process that will mark an end to the political transition and the subsequent and permanent return to constitutional order”. They both believe that “All stakeholders and Central African institutions… have done everything they could to respond to the shortcomings that led to the cancellation of the first round of the general elections by the Constitutional Court for Transition”. They provided assurances that the EU “will remain attentive over the next stages of the ongoing electoral process”. (AN)
