Brussels, 17/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 16 February, talks in Brussels between Sudan's Foreign Affairs Minister Ibrahim Ghandour and representatives from the European institutions focused on security, migration and development in Sudan and the region.
Invited by High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, Ghadour also met European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos and European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.
A press release published by the European External Action Service (EEAS) says that the EU spoke of its concerns about the continuing conflicts in the states of South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur, and the constant breaches of human rights and international humanitarian law.
Given the strategic location of Sudan at the crossroads between the Horn of Africa, North Africa, East Africa and the Sahel, “the EU will continue to encourage Sudan's constructive efforts in terms of peace and security in the wider region”.
As part of the follow up of the EU-Africa summit in Valletta, the EU announced that projects are currently being prepared to help Sudan tackle the deep-rooted causes of illegal migration. These projects will be financed for up to €100 million by the new emergency trust fund for Africa. The EU also stated it is ready to support “any concrete efforts to tackle migration”. An EU follow-up mission will soon be sent to Khartoum. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
