Council awaiting new proposals

Brussels, 08/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - The digital single market occupies a relatively minor place in the work timetable of the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU, which was published on Thursday 7 January. There is good reason for this, as most of the dossiers are not yet the subject of a legislative proposal from the European Commission, which is due to happen in the course of 2016.

“The digital single market is the most important issue to be discussed by the Telecommunications Council, in particular the revision of the regulatory framework for telecom companies”, the Presidency states in its document. “A modern regulatory framework framework will strengthen competition, competitiveness and investment in the telecommunications sector”.

The 'Telecoms' Council will take place in Brussels on 26 May 2016. Its provisional agenda includes: the directive on the accessibility of websites of public sector bodies (following the launch of negotiations with the Parliament), the Commission's forthcoming proposal on the utilisation of the 700 MHz band and two presentations by the Commission, one on the role of platforms and the other on cloud computing.

During its term, the Presidency also undertakes to tackle the question of the wholesale roaming market and Internet governance. It also awaits “with great interest (…) the online administration action plan announced as part of the strategy for the digital single market”. (Original version in French by Sophie Petitjean)
