08/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Canete to visit Poland on 25 January. Climate and forests may be the focus of talks in Warsaw on Monday 25 January between the EU Climate and Energy Commissioner and Polish energy minister Krzysztof Tchorzeweski. Poland wants the EU to incorporate measures from the Paris Accord into EU legislation regarding the carbon capture capacity of forests (see EUROPE 11452). In response to a reporter who asked whether the subject would be discussed in the talks, a spokesperson for Commissioner Canete said on Friday that a proposal about sharing efforts in non-ETS sectors would be unveiled later this year and it cannot be ruled out that the subject would be discussed. The Paris Accord does not mention carbon neutrality, but rather about emissions peaking as soon as possible, followed by an emissions reduction to strike a balance at the end of the century between anthropic emissions and carbon capture by forests. The Commission is expected to unveil tree-planting proposals later this year. (AN)
