Copa-Cogeca welcomes results of latest Eurobarometer

Brussels, 08/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 7 January, the agricultural organisations and cooperatives of the EU (Copa-Cogeca) welcomed the results of the new Eurobarometer survey (see EUROPE 11462) which show “that consumers are increasingly aware of the importance of agriculture and rural areas for the future”.

Secretary General Pekka Pesonen announced, amongst other things, that over 90% of the respondents see agriculture and rural areas as important for the future. “This is great news. The majority of citizens also recognise the importance of the Common Agriculture Policy in stimulating economic growth and creating jobs in rural areas”. Pesonen went on to call for a strong CAP that can fulfil its missions.

The survey also showed that 66% of consumers appreciate the benefits of forests in absorbing carbon dioxide, thus contributing to the fight against climate change and its harmful effects.

Copa-Cogeca also points out that there is a need to step up communication. Farm open days, which now take place in many countries, are one example of an excellent initiative to bring citizens closer to agriculture and nature. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
