Commission tackles barriers to cross-border retail services

Brussels, 09/12/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 10 December, the European Commission will launch a public consultation on the obstacles which are preventing the single market for retail financial services from becoming reality.

The aim of the Green Paper to be published by the European institution is to identify initiatives which could be taken at European level to help consumers to have easier access to cross-border financial services, and enable companies to provide these services more easily.

For instance, there could be a reflection on how to make life easier for European citizens when they move to another member state and find themselves unable to use their bank card, or find that their health insurance premiums have gone up dramatically. Other areas for reflection will be opened, such as access to certain savings products not available to certain members of the public, or reducing the excessive charges when transferring money in different currencies. The Green Paper will also consult stakeholders on the best ways of boosting competition by changing retail banking service providers. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
