ENSTO-E highlights winter electricity supply risk in Poland

Brussels, 02/12/2015 (Agence Europe) - In its winter outlook 2015-16 for electricity supply in 34 European countries, which was published on Tuesday 1 December, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) anticipates sufficient generation across Europe but says that special attention will need to be paid to Poland.

Overall, Europe has sufficient generation for both normal and severe demand conditions. ENTSO-E explains that while various countries may require imports to cover the expected demand, cross-border capacity is expected to be mostly sufficient to accommodate them. ENTSO-E adds that by using interconnection flexibility, demand side management (from industrial customers) and strategic reserves measures, supply-demand balance for the coming winter should be met in most European countries. However, in Poland this supply-demand balance was identified as potentially at risk.

During severe conditions, there is a risk that Polish import needs may exceed its available import capacity, which is often limited by unscheduled flows. Urgent action is required to maintain a reliable amount of import capacity in Poland throughout the winter. Discussions are ongoing in this regard within the TSO coordination initiative for regional security. ENTSO-E concludes that the situation could also be tight for Belgium, France and the UK in severe climate conditions. (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
