19/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - UDC victory at parliamentary elections. Switzerland's right-wing populist party, the UDC, which is anti-immigration and anti-EU, has made strong progress in the Swiss parliamentary elections, becoming the first party of the Helvetic Confederation. According to French press agency AFP, the UDC has obtained nearly a third of the seats at the National Council. The UDC is the party behind the 9 February 2013 initiative on limiting immigration (particularly from the EU). The European Commission has taken note of this election result, said Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas on Monday 19 October, and will continue to work for a beneficial relationship for both sides with the government that is formed on 9 December, at the end of the Swiss electoral process. A new meeting between European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and current President of the Swiss Confederation Simonetta Sommaruga is being prepared, but no date has yet been announced.
