Brussels, 19/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 19 October, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of Algeria, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Qatar, Saudia Arabia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, the UK and US called on all parties of the political dialogue in Libya to adopt the political agreement immediately that was negotiated with United Nations Special Representative Bernardino Leon on 8 October (see EUROPE 11407).
“To secure Libya's future, we urge the Libyan parties to immediately approve the hard fought political compromise set forth in the political agreement”, the 12 foreign ministers and Mogherini stated, also urging full application of the agreement “without introducing further amendments”.
In their view, this agreement will provide Libya with “a period of stability (…) until a new constitution can be agreed”. They stated that elections can then be held “which will finally give Libya a fully representative, inclusive and democratic parliament whose legitimacy is acknowledged across the country and the world”.
The 12 ministers and Mogherini reiterated that the international community was ready to work with the government of national unity, “at their request”, “in supporting the fight against terrorism, particularly ISIL and Ansar Al-Sharia, and in helping Libya face up to its many challenges”.
On Saturday 17 October, the United Nations Security Council threatened to take out sanctions against people obstructing the political transition process, and it urged the Libyans to work as quickly as possible for the formation of a national unity government.
