Brussels, 19/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 19 October, the European Commission announced the launch of the third phase of the EU's EUROsociAL+ programme to support social cohesion in Latin America for the 2016-2020 period.
Although progress has been achieved in social cohesion, the Commission states in a press release that Latin America remains the world's most unequal region - not only on the level of salaries but also as regards access to basic public services, discrimination against the most vulnerable groups, and the respect of human rights.
Among the projects that have obtained co-financing from the EU during previous phases of the programme are the creation of help centres for the most vulnerable people (Casas de Derechos) - such as female victims of violence - in Honduras, the improvement of tax services in Bolivia, the expansion of employment services in Costa Rica, and the fight against corruption in El Salvador.
