Brussels, 09/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 8 October, the European Commission published a roadmap assessing the EU regulation on health and nutrition claims (Regulation 1924/2006 amended by Regulation 109/2008/EC).
The regulation governs the use in the EU of nutritional and health claims for food that manufacturers are allowed to make to proclaim the scientifically proven virtues of food products so as to avoid misinforming the consumer. It is the European Food Safety Authority which assesses the scientific pertinence of claims that manufacturers wish to make about their food products.
The recently published roadmap is the first stage in the assessment process and lays down the objective, content and extent of the evaluation, which will focus on determining whether the rules in place allow the legislation's objective to be met for health claims for plants. The evaluation exercise will also consider nutritional profiles for which rules have not yet been introduced.
Stakeholders will have four weeks to submit their comments and the result of the evaluation will be used to determine whether the regulation will need improving. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
