Brussels, 12/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - Europe will not be able to meet its climate targets for the non-ETS sectors unless it brings in fuel efficiency standards by 2025 for all new cars, vans and lorries, according to a study published on Wednesday 10 June by the NGO Transport & Environment (T&E).
In a scenario in which the transport sector needs to cut its emissions by 30% between now and 2030, the study shows that bringing in CO2 emission standards for all new vehicles between now and 2025 and 2030 could deliver 42% of the emissions reduction required from transport.
In the run-up to the road transport decarbonisation conference to be held by the European Commission on 18 June, T&E argues that this level of CO2 reductions would allow road transport to make “a proportionate contribution” to the EU's climate and energy targets for 2030. Having had sight of a position paper of the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), T&E accuses the organisation of “lobbying the Commission to delay any new fuel efficiency standards for cars and vans until after 2030”. The T&E is entitled “Road to 2030: how EU vehicle efficiency standards help Member States meet climate targets - Transport emissions reductions in the context of the 2030 Effort Sharing Decision”.
