Brussels, 12/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - In Luxembourg on Friday 12 June, European telecoms minsters welcomed the single market strategy unveiled to them by vice-president of the European Commission Andrus Ansip (see EUROPE 11309).
The Telecoms Council said that Europe needs to be ambitious about the digital economy and make the most of the resources offered by digital technology to companies and consumers.
In the absence of legislative proposals, the Council only expressed a view on the general guidelines of the strategy for a digital single market. Latvian transport minister Anrijs Matiss said the debate had been very fruitful and constructive. He said Europe had the possibility to be a leader in digital matters, but it isn't making the most of all the trump cards and the obstacles must be removed. Like the culture, audiovisual and competitiveness ministers recently, the telecoms minster made comments that will be summarised by the Latvian Presidency of the Council and then transmitted to the European Council for a discussion about the digital strategy scheduled to take place at the European Summit on 25 and 26 June.
