Luxembourg, 12/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - The Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU is highly optimistic about the possibility of reaching agreement with the European Parliament this month on the draft information network security (INS) directive.
After a Telecoms Council in Luxembourg on Friday 12 June, Latvian transport minister Anrijs Matiss said they were reaching the end of the talks with the EP and if agreement can be reached on the crucial points, then agreement should be reached.
The final stumbling blocks in the talks with the EP are the scope of application for the directive (whether it should also cover new internet operators) and operational and strategic cooperation issues (see EUROPE 11206).
Digital Economy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said it was important to have EU legislation on information security as an umbrella to counter cyberattacks that use identical operating modes irrespective of country and borders. He said he was very optimistic, certain even, that agreement would be reached in the next few weeks. (Isabelle Lamberty)
