Brussels, 30/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Poland on Wednesday 29 April, asking it to ensure that Directive 2009/28/EC on promoting renewable energy is correctly implemented, in particular with regard to biofuels.
The directive includes provisions for achieving the objective of a 20% share of renewable energy in final energy consumption in 2020 and sets individual targets for each member state in achieving the EU-wide target. The text also includes a 10% target for renewables in the transport sector. Biofuels can be used to achieve this target, but they must meet a set of sustainability requirements.
The Commission believes that, contrary to what the directive stipulates, Polish law unjustifiably treats sustainable biofuels and raw materials of different geographical origins differently.
The Commission has addressed similar problems in infringement procedures against Spain and Portugal. (Emmanuel Hagry)
