Expo 2015 in Milan will highlight food security

Brussels, 30/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - To resolve the problem of food security, a strong and sustainable agricultural and fisheries sector across the EU, a thriving and diversified rural economy, a clean environment, and family farms, supported by a robust, fairer, internationally sustainable and appropriately financed common agricultural policy are necessary.

This is what the European Parliament requested by adopting (460 for, 126 against, with 20 abstentions) a resolution on Wednesday 30 April for the Expo 2015 in Milan, which opens this Friday 1 May. The EP is also underlining the fact that it is also important to implement a sustainable and appropriately financed Common Fisheries Policies (CFP) and to guarantee coherence between EU trade and fisheries policies. It also says it is necessary to step up the fight against illegal fishing. The EP calls on the Commission to ensure that the 'EU pavilion' at Expo 2015 raises awareness of the need to address urgent problems in the entire food supply chain, including the long-term sustainability of food production, distribution and consumption, to tackle food waste and to combat the problem of malnutrition, poor diets and obesity.
