24/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU regrets introduction of firing squads. On Tuesday 24 March, the European Union expressed regret at the introduction of firing squads as the method of execution in the US state of Utah. On Monday 23 March, Utah became the first US state officially to re-establish this method of execution should there be a lack of lethal injection products. “Independently of the method, the death penalty is cruel, inhumane and irreversible, and cannot be justified in any circumstances”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. The spokesperson stated that the EU would continue to call for the abolition of capital punishment, both on the bilateral and on the multilateral level. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
