Brussels, 25/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - The Party of the European Left (LEFT) says in a statement on Monday 23 February that “only a radical change of the dominant social and economic order can give an answer to the question of social justice that grows in the north and south of the Mediterranean”. This statement was adopted by the second Mediterranean Conference of the Left, which took place in Istanbul on Sunday 22 February. The goal is to end up with common positions and the start of coordinated action from the member parties of this regional coalition.
The example of Syriza (Greece) is highlighted, as is that of the Kurds fighting Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria. Among the positions voiced are a Mediterranean free of nuclear weapons and free from NATO-military bases, as well as support for various movements fighting for their rights (Palestine, Cyprus, the Kurds and Sahara). Added to this are the defence and protection of the environment and common goods (such as water and public services), “which should be under democratic and popular control”. A common roadmap was adopted for this.
The statement also mentions social and economic demands and the rejection of austerity policies. (Translation from the original French version)
