Brussels, 25/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 24 February, MEPs from the EP's Civil Liberties Committee amended new European Police College (CEPOL) rules by adopting a report (43 votes in favour, 4 against, 4 abstentions). CEPOL is a European-wide agency in charge of training police forces. MEPs highlighted the need for CEPOL to focus on cross-border related projects and those that have a strong link with the EU's internal security strategy and avoid the duplication of action carried out at a national level. They also referred to terrorism prevention projects and organised crime, as well as cybercrime and financial investigations. They highlighted the need for CEPOL, which is based in Budapest, to respect provisions on fundamental rights and data protection. The rapporteur, Kinga Gál (EPP, Hungary), has been given a mandate by the committee to begin negotiations with the Council. (Translation from the original French version)
