SECTORAL POLICIES / (ae) food

20/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - Shift to adapting legislation on pesticides in food. On Tuesday, 19 January, a new step was made towards updating legislation on the limiting of residues from pesticides in foodstuffs. The Council of the EU decided not to oppose the adoption of three European Commission regulations to amend Annexes II, III and V in Regulation 396/2005/EC. This regulation sets out the Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) in foodstuffs and animal fodder derived from plants and animals. Its revision will affect the values applicable to the 26 pesticide residues. The go-ahead from the Council will consist of a simple formality in the committee and examination procedures frameworks. Maximum pesticide residues in foodstuffs stands at 0.01 mg/kg. Annex I lists all products for human food consumption and animal fodder covered by the regulation. Annex II contains the specific MRL, which are, in certain cases above the limit by default. Annex III contains provisional MRL levels. (AN)
