Brussels, 20/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Tibor Navracsics has provided assurances to the education sector that it will be a priority dossier for the European Commission. On Tuesday 20 January, he informed MEPs at the EP culture committee that this issue will be among the five priorities in the Juncker plan. DG EAC will be a key actor in the decision-making process for implementing the plan.
On the issue of revised copyright, the Commissioner said that he would “defend the remuneration of authors” but that it would be extremely delicate when trying to establish a balance between consumers' rights to free access to culture. Asked about the need to exclude culture from the scope of the TTIP, Navracsics provided assurances that they had, “extremely strong safeguard clauses” and that he would be working in close collaboration with Commissioner Malmström, who is in charge of negotiations on behalf of the Commission, to ensure that these clauses are applied.
In relation to the events that happened in Paris, Navracsics emphasised that the European Commission had its role to play to ensure respect for fundamental rights. (IL)
