Huge potential of aquaculture

Brussels, 09/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - A regional conference on aquaculture is being organised in Bari on 10-11 December by the Italian Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers, together with the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and with the support of the European Commission and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The theme of the conference is “Blue Growth in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea: developing sustainable aquaculture for food security”, and the objective is to debate the policies and means for developing aquaculture - an activity that “offers great potential to provide sources of healthy and nutritious seafood and meet the rising demand for fishery products”, the brochure for the conference states. Aquaculture is also “called upon to play a major role for food security, employment and economic development at the global level and thus constitutes a strategic sector for the future, in particular under the Blue Growth perspective”.
