09/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - Nearly €700 million over seven years for country's democratic transition. The European Union is to allocate €688 million (US$ 900 million) in financial support to Burma/Myanmar by 2020 to assist the country's “multiple transition”, particularly the democratic one, the European Commission announced on Monday 8 December. The funding will help “to develop rural areas and agriculture; improve food and nutrition security; support education; [and] improve governance and the rule of law”. The objective is also to contribute to “peacebuilding” in a country where there are armed conflicts between the central authority and ethnic minorities. The education sector will receive up to €241 million. (LC)
