Brussels, 09/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - Named European Green Capital 2015, the British city of Bristol was officially given the title in Copenhagen (Denmark) on Monday 8 December. The handover between Copenhagen, European Green Capital for 2014, and Bristol, took place at a ceremony attended by Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for the Environment.
The Commissioner took the opportunity to congratulate the Mayor of Bristol and the people who live in the city, but also to launch a new European competition, 'Green Leaf', for smaller European cities (50,000 to 100,000 inhabitants) wishing to improve their green growth performances.
“Citizens of Bristol should be very proud, and I congratulate them on winning the title. Bristol offers inspiration to other European cities that also want to evolve towards a greener future. The competition 'Green Leaf' is aimed at smaller European cities which demonstrate commitment to green growth and a better environment. More than 450 European cities are eligible to apply”, said Karmenu Vella.
Applications must be made by 31 March 2015. (AN)
