Brussels, 17/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - With the Ebola epidemic having claimed more than 5,000 lives in West Africa, the leaders of the G20 (Brisbane, Australia, 15 and 16 November), who are “deeply concerned by the humanitarian and economic impact” of this crisis in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, have undertaken to guarantee that international efforts will help to stem the spread of this haemorrhagic fever and tackle the economic and humanitarian costs in the medium term. In their final press release, they express their support for an “urgent coordinated international response to contain this crisis and respond to it”. They call upon the international financial institutions to help the countries affected to face the economic impact of this humanitarian crisis. The G20 urges the World Bank and the IMF to continue their support to these countries and welcomes the initiative of the IMF to make a further $300 million available to tackle the epidemic and alleviate the pressure on Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, through a combination of concessional loans, debt relief and donations.
