Netherlands targeted for non-respect of social rights

Brussels, 10/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 10 November, the European Committee for Social Rights (ECSR) concluded that the Netherlands was not respecting its commitments under the European Social Charter regarding the homeless and illegal immigrants.

The ECSR has made two different decisions regarding the Netherlands. The first follows the examination of a complaint lodged by the European Federation of National Organisations Working with the Homeless (FEANTSA). This deems that legislation and practices in the Netherlands do not guarantee sufficient access to lodging for those needing it or a quantity and sufficient quality of accommodation for vulnerable groups, particularly children. The ECSR also considers that the number of places available for emergency accommodation is insufficient.

The second decision follows a complaint from the Conference of European Churches. In this regard, the Netherlands is accused of having failed to ensure that illegal adult immigrants receive emergency social assistance that includes food, water and clothing.

The two decisions will be sent to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which could adopt a resolution on the matter by the beginning of 2015. (JK)
