Theresa Griffin wants CCS technology strategy

Brussels, 10/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 10 November in Brussels, Theresa Griffin MEP (S&D, United Kingdom) hosted a hearing at the European Parliament on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The hearing was organised in collaboration with the European platform organising support for this technology, the Zero Emissions Platform (ZEP). Griffin called for developing a CCS development strategy throughout Europe.

She stated: “It is crucial that we recognise the importance of CCS and what it will bring to industrial growth in my region (North West of England, Ed) and beyond …I hope we can go forward with a strategy for CCS across Europe. As we move toward a more sustainable solution to heavy industry and energy security, we must also keep in mind our climate objectives - CCS will be a key part of this. I will be working to ensure that CCS targets will be included in a 2030 energy and climate framework”.

CCS technology is a low-cost solution to attain the EU's decarbonisation objectives, explained the ZEP in a press release. CCS could prove profitable and ensure at least 4% of the greenhouse gas emissions reduction target set out in the 2030 framework. ZEP also argues that 80% of this reduction would be achieved in the electricity sector and 20% in high energy intensive industries. ZEP appealed for CCS to become a reality in Europe as it has in Canada, where it was introduced at the beginning of October with the first global level CCS project (EUROPE 11172). (EH)
