EU condemns attacks in Sahatta

Brussels, 10/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 10 November, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini condemned a series of explosions the day before in Sahatta, Libya. “The series of explosions that went off in the city of Sahatta, where UNSRSG Bernardino Leon was meeting key Libyan interlocutors are heinous acts and can only prevent Libya from reaching a peaceful settlement to the conflict”, she stressed in a statement. At least one booby-trapped vehicle exploded in front of the security headquarters in Sahatta, where Leon was meeting the Prime Minister, Abdullah al-Thinni. There have been no reports of any victims.

The High Representative stressed that “these attacks undermine the dialogue process”. She called upon all parties, “in the interest of the Libyan people”, “to refrain from such destructive acts and to participate in the UN-led dialogue process”. Violence has also continued in Benghazi, where 300 people are believed to have been killed in three weeks of clashes.

As she previously stressed on 6 November (EUROPE 11193), Mogherini reiterated that as far as the EU is concerned, dialogue, in whatever shape or form, remains crucial, and that the solution of the crisis requires a political settlement. She added that the EU fully backs the work of the UN and Leon. (CG)
