Brussels, 10/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 8 November, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini welcomed the formation of a new government in Yemen.
“The announcement of the formation of a new and inclusive government under the leadership of Prime Minister Khaled Bahah is a critical step to make headway in much-needed economic and political reforms towards the successful conclusion of the transition”, Mogherini stressed in a press release. She added that it was “important” that all political actors engage “constructively” to support this government in implementing “decisive reforms for the benefit of all Yemenis” and in taking measures to “improve fiscal sustainability and fight corruption in the public administration”. Shi'ite rebels and the party of the former President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, have rejected this new government.
Mogherini also called upon the Constitutional Drafting Committee to quickly deliver a draft Constitution enshrining the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen and safeguarding the values enunciated in the National Dialogue Conference outcomes.
The High Representative reiterated that the full implementation of the national partnership agreement for peace and its security annex is “now critical to offer a way out of the current crisis”, in line with the results of the National Dialogue Conference and the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative. She went on to stress the EU's determination to continue to support Yemen in its transition.
