Estonia must change its law on cigarette sales

Brussels, 25/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - In a reasoned opinion dated Thursday 25 September, the European Commission officially called on Estonia to change its legislation on excise duty on the sale of cigarettes. n Estonia, the deadline on which the cigarette sale is taxable is related to the date stamp on the packaging. Three months after the entry into force of a new presentation of the fiscal mark, cigarettes bearing the old mark can no longer be sold. EU legislation does not contain any provisions authorising states to limit the distribution of tobacco products already on sale for tax reasons. This sales ban is therefore unjustified, the Commission argues. Estonia now has two months to comply, or the Commission could bring the country before the Court of Justice of the EU. (EL)
