Umea, 25/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - Trilogue negotiations between the institutions will kick off this autumn on introducing an accident alert system, eCall. The go-ahead from the European Parliament's internal market committee was given to Olga Sehnalova (S&D, Czech Republic) in the shape of a negotiating brief on Thursday 25 September (31 votes in favour, 2 against, with 3 abstentions). Negotiations with the Council and Commission are expected to start at the beginning of October on the basis of a report adopted last February by the previous European Parliament. The Italian Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers is eager to obtain an agreement on the subject by the end of the year. Sehnalova is expected to argue in favour of free access to this system that can save the lives of road accident victims (by faster emergency services' responses), and also the protection of private data that will be transmitted by the system.
