OECD and FAO highlight continued fall in agricultural product prices. Prices of the main vegetable crops are expected to fall over the next two years, then stabilise above pre-2008 levels but well below the heights that have recently been reached, according to the most recent issue of the OECD and FAO's Agricultural Outlook. Demand for agricultural products is expected to remain firm but grow less rapidly than over the past decade. Cereals remain a crucial ingredient in food for human consumption but proteins, fats and sugar are becoming increasingly important in many regions of the world as income and urbanisation levels rise. The study shows that these changes, combined with an increase in the world's population, will require significant increases in production over the next decade. The regions of the developing world, principally Asia and Latin America, will account for 75% of the increase in agricultural production over the next ten years. (IL)
