Brussels, 28/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 22 August, the European Space Agency (ESA) stated that it now has the two Galileo satellites that were put into incorrect orbits on 22 August under control. In a press release, the ESA confirmed that these satellites were in a safe state, correctly pointing to the sun, properly powered and fully under control. The ESA team will now investigate the possibilities of exploiting the satellites to maximum advantage, despite their non-nominal injection orbits and within the limited propulsion capabilities. Each satellite cost the European budget €70 million. One ESA source said that it would be possible to get these satellites working but it is unlikely that this will be to their full potential. The same source explained that, given the shortage of fuel on board, it would not be possible place the satellites in their initially planned orbits and that it would therefore be difficult to put them into the positions into which they were supposed to go.
