09/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - Dalia Grybauskaite standing for re-election as Lithuanian president. Lithuanians will be voting in the first round of presidential elections on Sunday 11 May and the current president, Dalia Grybauskaite, seems well-placed to win a second term of office. Nicknamed the Baltic Iron Lady, Grybauskaite hopes to win the election in the first round. She has been bitterly criticising Russia in the Ukrainian crisis, and allowed US troops into the country at the end of April as part of NATO's reinforcement of its presence in the Baltic states that shook off 50 years of Soviet occupation in 1991. On the tenth anniversary of Lithuania joining the EU, Grybauskaite said that a strong and united European Union which is capable of acting as a counterweight to Russia's imperial ambitions was extremely important for Lithuanian security.
