Brussels, 09/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 14 May, the European Commission will be deciding on Telefonica Deutschland's planned takeover of E-Plus, the German subsidiary of Dutch company KPN. At a CDU event on Wednesday 7 May, German Chancellor Angela Merkel set the cat amongst the pigeons. “A balance needs to be achieved between market power and competition so that we can score internationally”, said Merkel in a Reuters report. Pointing out that China had three big telecoms providers and the EU twenty-eight of them, she said that when one of the EU's telecoms providers tries to grow, EU competition rules jeopardise their plans. Her ally and EPP candidate to become the next president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, said recently that the first thing he would do if he became president of the Commission would be to re-think competition rules in the digital age.
