Brussels, 30/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 28 July, the Republican Turkish Party (CTP, Left) won the early parliamentary elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with 38.4% of the vote - ahead of the National Unity Party (UBP, Nationalist) with 27.2% - according to the full provisional results. The UBP has until now been in power, and is the party from which President Dervis Eroglu came. It is also supported by Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan. The Democrat Party (DP, Liberal) came third with 23.10% - ahead of the Communal Democratic Party (CDP, Left) with 7.41% of the vote. The CTP thus wins 21 of the 50 seats in parliament, the DP wins 12, the UBP 14, and the TDP 3. Of the 173,000 people who were registered, 70% turned out to vote. The reunification of Cyprus was not a campaign issue although the negotiations could resume in October. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognised only by Turkey. (CG/transl.fl)
