Ashton's call for Libya's security and stability

Brussels, 30/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - “Concerned” about the serious incidents that occurred in Benghazi over the past few days, and firmly condemning the murder of the lawyer and political activist Abdelsalam al-Mosmary, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton called, on 29 July, “on all Libyans to support national efforts, led by the democratically elected government of Mr Zeidan, to ensure the security and stability of the country in the face of those groups who try to undermine the Libyan transition”. She trusts the Libyan authorities will ensure that those responsible for violence against the Libyan people, be it shootings or bombings, be brought to justice to answer for their crimes.

Ashton also encouraged the Libyan authorities to proceed as quickly as possible with the process of drafting and adopting a new constitution.

“The EU remains a firm friend to Libya and steadfast in its readiness to stand by the Libyan people in meeting the challenges ahead”, added Ashton in a press release from her spokesperson.

On 29 July, Prime Minister Zeidan announced the imminent reshuffle of his government and the General National Congress made public the appointment of a new chief of staff of the army. Violence continues in several towns in the country. (CG/transl.fl)
