Brussels, 09/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European commissioner responsible for home affairs, Cecilia Malmström, has said on her Twitter account that she would be closely examining the latest report by Amnesty International (AI) published on 9 July. The report denounces the fact that Greek border guards have been sending Syrian refugees back to Turkey where they could be in danger. AI denounces the “dangerous” methods used by the Greek authorities that do not even grant migrants individual interviews upon arriving at the Greek border. The report explains the dangers undergone by the migrants seeking to reach the Greek islands and gives details of the deplorable conditions in which those who are intercepted are sometimes detained. The report is based on evidence given by some 30 migrants that spoke of ill treatment, theft and even physical violence with some migrants being thrown into the sea, it was explained to AI. The human rights NGO says what is happening at the Greek border does not just put Greece to shame but the whole of the EU. It considers the number of expulsions of migrants observed as “alarming”. The commissioner has urged the Greek authorities to respect the fundamental rights of migrants. (SP/transl.jl)
