Brussels, 09/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - Lamb from the salt-water area of the Somme has been granted the EU's protected appellation of origin (PAO), announced the European Commission, the French agricultural ministry and the French Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité (INAO) on Tuesday 9 July, making it the two-hundredth such product in France (not including wines and spirits). Using official quality and origin logos, the European Commission designates geographical denominations (PAO, and protected geographical indications, PGI) and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG). France comes second to Italy in the league table of the number of products recognised at EU level in terms of quality or geographical area. Italy has 254 registered products, and France is followed by Spain with 164 products, explains the European Commission's website. Of the 200 French products, 85 are protected appellations of origin, 113 protected geographical indications and one guaranteed traditional speciality. (LC/transl.fl)
