Contribution to European macro-regional strategy

Brussels, 09/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - The “ Latin Arch”, the group of European countries around the Mediterranean Basin, will announce its contribution to developing a European macro-regional strategy for development geared to economic, social and territorial cohesion in the Mediterranean.

The report is to examine the circumstances prevailing in the Mediterranean Basin to justify the development of a macro-regional strategy. The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) takes the view that the region has strategic importance for the EU, not only economically (trade, energy, migration) but also politically (security, stability).

The committee that coordinates the work met in Alghero (Sardinia) on 27 June, bringing together various stakeholders of the Mediterranean region in order to defend the role of the local authorities in each country, for the promotion of measures aimed at encouraging job creation and social cohesion in the Mediterranean Basin.
