Brussels, 26/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - With a view to modernising professional qualifications in inland navigation, the European Commission has launched a public consultation from 26 March to 21 June. The Commission comments that there are recurrent problems of worker mobility in this sector due to the plethora of national rules and regulations related to requirements for the professional qualifications needed. This lack of harmonisation can lead to dangerous situations due to a lack of communication. Consequently, the European Commission calls on the parties concerned to give their opinion regarding worker mobility and safety in the sector of inland navigation. The initiative envisaged by the Commission could include review of Directive 96/50/EC on harmonisation of the conditions for obtaining national boatmasters' certificates for the carriage of goods and passengers by inland waterway in the Community, and Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications applicable to all inland waterways.
