Few European films shown in cinemas around the world. The European Broadcasting Monitoring Centre has for the first time published a report on the success of European films on the main non-EU markets, a report entitled “The Theatrical Export of European Films.” It says that in 2010 European films accounted for 26% of all sales income from films shown in cinemas in Europe, but only 3% outside Europe. The report was part-financed by the European Union's MEDIA programme and drawn up from cinema sales information provided by Rentrak Corporation, examining the success of European films in ten large non-European cinema markets - the United States/Canada, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand and Venezuela. Folloxing are the main conclusions: 1) In 2010, some 1,281 European films were released exclusively to cinemas in at least one of the 27 cinema markets in the EU or the ten non-EU markets covered by the report. Nearly 90% of said films were released in Europe and only 103 of them (8%) were shown in cinemas outside Europe; 2) On the thirty-seven markets examined, more than 378 million tickets were sold for European films, some 70.4 million of them outside Europe. Some 19% of ticket sales for European films were outside Europe. In 2009, European films attracted nearly 84 million tickets on the ten non-EU markets, with ticket saies for European films outside Europe falling by 16% from 2011.3) Based on average ticket prices in each market, gross turnover for European films is estimated at over €2.35 billion around the world, including €376 million outside Europe. In other words, European films made less than 16% of their turnover outside Europe; 4) In 2010, the US market for European films accounted for 62% of gross ticket sales outside the EU or €232.3 million; 5) In 2010, France exported the highest number of films outside the EU (33% of all European films shown in cinemas in the ten non-EU countries covered by the survey), but in terms of ticket sales, the United Kingdom comes first with 25 million tickets sold in the ten non-EU countries, in other words 36% of the takings for European countries in the ten non-EU countries in question in 2010.
