Brussels, 05/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has noted the protocol of agreement sent the day before by Greece to Macedonia (FYROM) to take the name issue forward, announced the spokesman for Stefan Füle, Enlargement Commissioner, on Friday 5 October. In his letter to his Macedonian counterpart, Nikola Poposki, the Greek foreign minister suggests a protocol of agreement be signed to define the “basic parameters for the name issue solution”. This will be a decisive step towards consolidating relations of good neighbourliness based on resolving the issue of name and of FYROM's European prospects, the Greek side said. The text suggests continuing dialogue with a view to finding a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue. Greeks state that, to give talks fresh impetus, “there is a need to continue the process within the agreed framework of the basic parameters for the name issue solution, which will also include an agreement that any solution to the dispute will have a clear notion about the name and will not give chances for ambiguities around distinguishing the territory of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the regions of the neighbouring countries, especially the North Greece region”. However, FYROM cannot easily accept this point. The text also states that both countries must undertake to ensure mutual respect of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence. (CG/transl.jl)
