Brussels, 05/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - A group of MEPs, headed by Malika Benarab-Attou (Greens/EFA, France), sent a letter, on Thursday 4 October, to the Algerian Embassy to protest against the detention of a trade unionist, Yacine Zaïd, who is a human rights defender from the Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LADDH - Ligue Algérienne pour la défense des droits de l'homme). In their letter, they solemnly urge the government of Algeria to do everything possible to allow Zaïd's immediate release. Zaïd is accused of insulting behaviour (towards police officers) and of having incited unarmed gatherings. Objection to this is raised by the MEPs and by human rights defence associations and other related associations active in that field. (FB/transl.jl)
